Visceral Osteopathy involves gentle manipulation to affect the organs including the lungs, heart, digestive tract, kidneys, liver, uterus & ovaries. This is possible by virtue of their connective tissue support system. In health each organ expresses a subtle motility and is surrounded by fluid lined membranes that enable healthy motion.
At optimal health, the relationship between the organs and structures of the body (muscles, membranes, fasciae and bones) remains stable despite the body’s endless varieties of motion. However if one organ can’t move in harmony with its surrounding viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions or displacement (after surgery), it works against all the body’s organs and structures. This disharmony creates fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body is forced to move around. That chronic irritation, in turn, paves the way for disease and dysfunction.
The osteopathic practitioner will work through the body’s visceral system to locate and alleviate these abnormal points of tension throughout the body. There are many techniques that use gentle pressure to encourage normal movement of the viscera and their connective tissues. Trained practitioners use the rhythmic motions of the visceral system to evaluate how any abnormal forces interplay, overlap and affect the normal body forces at work. Conditions that may benefit form visceral work include I.B.S, chronic bladder infections, menstrual pains, gas and constipation.
